Saibaba - The end of an ERA

Yesterday(24th April 2011-Sunday), at around 10 ish in the morning, news broke out about the demise of Satya Saibaba. It ended weeks of speculation about his health, the trust he runs, the property the trust owns, politics, relationships, intrigue and above all the frenzy of all his devotees. He was 85.

It was indeed a sad day,as it ended an ERA of Mysticism,Godliness,Faith,Magic Vs Rationalism,Aura of a super human being and good deeds towards the common man.He had a tremendous following, all across the globe and his trust is rumoured to be having assests to the tune of Rs 40,000 crores and his Seva Samities are spread across almost 135 Countries.

Few could match his strength of drawing crowds, though, today one sees scores of Godmen/Women trying to woo believers and followers and falling into traps of Money laundering, sexual exploits, amassing wealth, sleeze...etc.Though he was an ordinary mortal,he has been immortalised. This is basically on account of the community and social work rendered by him and his Trusts/Associations.Remarkable has been his work in the areas of Provision of Education,Healthcare,Roads and Infrastructure,Provision of water by constructing Lift Irrigation schemes,Resevoirs,Canals in the backward district of Anantapur. It  has been really commendable especially since has done this on his own without either Govt help or intervention, both in terms of drawing up the schemes or in funding.Added to this is the fact that Puttaparthi is on the world map as a tourist destination with scores of Saibaba's devotees from across the world coming to meet, have darshan and stay in Puttaparthi, doing community service.
We need more babas, more people doing  good socially relevant work and thereby helping the Society at large to grow and prosper. As they say in Telugu,"Manava seve Madhava seva".He has been an embodiment of this coinage and deserves beatification like Mother Teresa.
